Scott, Seabrook
On a recent trip to Melbourne I jumped at the chance of paying a visit to a real-life circus performer who’s second act entailed being, without a doubt, a brilliant stay-at-home-dad. Scott’s ease at being in the limelight, coupled with his travels down paths less travelled, stands him in great stead for his new-found role. Jules: Can you tell me a little bit about your situation and how you’re involved with Olly; how often you look after him and how... » more
Gavin, Blue Mountains
Gavin’s mild manner is a perfect complement to his being a stay-at-home dad. This, together with his quiet and considered responses he gave during our discussion, made me reflect on my own family relationships. As you’ll no doubt see he appears more than well prepared for the challenges faced by a parent as his past work also included time as a UN logistics coordinator in Afghanistan. Jules: I like to start off by asking dads whether they associate with the... » more
Stephen, Bondi
Stephen, whom I was introduced to through Bruce, seemed to enjoy the opportunity to discuss his time as a dad whilst we sat in the park beside his house, as the home renovations could wait awhile longer. A teacher and more recently the co-author of Man With A Pram: The Bloke’s Guide shared his views, in retrospect, of his time spent with his daughter. Jules: Could you perhaps start by telling me the motivation to write your book, Man with... » more
Bryan, Annandale
As an old friend with whom I’d spent time both in watering holes and stuck on sides of cliffs whilst rock climbing, Bryan was a must to discuss parenting with. One for generally taking things in his stride—and not raising a sweat in the process—Bryan’s style of parenting was sure to be a breath of fresh air in this time of pushing one’s child to be the best. Since discussing his approach to being a new stay-at-home dad, his beautiful... » more
Bruce, Newtown
My first interview for this series couldn’t have been with a nicer guy. Bruce, a father of two vivacious girls, immediately made me welcome in their narrow Newtown terrace. As well as introducing me to his daughters, Ayesha and Rhani, I was immediately brought into the fold, meeting his partner, Cath, and some of their other friends and family members. The ease and candidness with which Bruce spoke of his experiences of being father of two, a business owner and... » more
On the road
Now that the web site is nearly complete I’m busy meeting, talking to and photographing other stay-at-home dads. It’s been an encouraging start with quite a number of dads being very welcoming towards the idea of this documentary project along with individual encouragements from both other parents and even some counsellors I’ve met along the way. Once I started making enquiries with friends and family as to whether they know of any stay-at-home dads there turned out to be a... » more
